Couplings

Couplings:

A coupling is a mechanical element that connects two shafts together to accurately transmit the power from the driver shaft to the driven shaft with the option of accommodating (to a certain extent) the misalignment of the two shafts.

The Purpose of Couplings

A shaft coupling can perform multiple functions in a machine. The design may incorporate more than one of these coupling features into the product’s function.

  • Power transmission
  • Shock and vibration absorption
  • Misalignment accommodation
  • Heat flow interruption
  • Overload protection

Types of Couplings

Couplings come in a host of different shapes and sizes. Some of them work great for generic applications, while some others are custom-designed application specific.

To make an informed choice, it is important to understand the capabilities and differences of the different types of couplings.

  • Rigid coupling: A rigid coupling permits little to no relative movement between the shafts. Rigid couplings are preferred when precise alignment is necessary. It is a simple shaft to shaft Connection without any flexible Element. For example, a Flange Coupling. Rigid couplings find use in vertical applications, such as a vertical pump. They are also used to transmit torque in high torque applications such as large turbines.
  • Flexible coupling: Any shaft coupling that can permit some degree of relative motion between the constituent shafts and provide vibration isolation is known as a flexible coupling. “Flexible coupling” is a common term and includes variety of couplings under its name. These couplings form the majority of the types of couplings in use today. Some popular examples of flexible couplings are gear coupling, universal joint and Oldham coupling. The flexible coupling has a very wide variety. Few of them are listed below:

The followings are the common types of couplings:

  • 1. Jaw Coupling
  • 2. Tyre Coupling
  • 3. Pin-Bush Coupling
  • 4. Chain Coupling
  • 5. Universal Joint
  • 6. Gear Coupling
  • 7. Grid Coupling
  • 8. Disc Coupling
  • 9. Diaphragm Coupling
  • 10. Bellow Coupling
